Attica - Alice Gretchen (Finney) Smyth, 88, formerly of Attica and Williamsport, passed away in the Ascension St. Vincent Hospital, Indianapolis, on Saturday, July 25, 2026 at 6:25 a.m.
Gretchen, as she was known to family and friends, was born in Lafayette, Indiana on April 1, 1938.  She was the daughter of the late Charles Digby and Alice Ann (McCorkle) Finney.  Gretchen was raised in Attica, graduating from Attica High School in 1956.  She later received her BS Degree in Nursing from Indiana University in 1960.
On August 27, 1960, Gretchen married Raymond Glenn Smyth in Attica.  Raymond preceded her in death on September 21, 2022.  Raymond was a Major in the U.S. Army and he and Gretchen traveled throughout the world.  Gretchen worked at various civilian hospitals while stationed with her husband in the service.  Once Raymond retired, they moved back to Attica and Gretchen worked as a registered nurse and a Director of Nursing for the Community Hospital and later Ascension St. Vincent Williamsport Hospital until her retirement in 2005.
Gretchen and her husband were both active members of the Attica-Williamsport Evangelical Presbyterian Church. Gretchen served as a Deacon in the church and sang in the choir.  She was a member of the Red Hat Society.  She enjoyed painting and traveling.  She enjoyed listening to her family share their memories of trips that they made.  She liked to tend to her flower garden and her specialty was petunias.  She loved to attend her children and grandchildren sporting events and extracurricular activities.
Gretchen leaves behind her three sons, Charles (Ann) Smyth, Greenfield, IN; David (Cindy) Smyth, Williamsport and Steven (Shannon) Smyth, Attica; six grandchildren, Renee (Alex) Hirsch, Lindsey Smyth, Christopher (Margaret) Smyth, Nathan Smyth, Austin (Delainey) Smyth and Owen (Nalani) Smyth; nine great-grandchildren, Karsyn, Layla, C.J., Wren, Sutton, Eleanor, Nolan, Alice and Penelope; her sister, Margaret Carolyn Dolan, Covington; two nieces, Kathryn (Todd) Gipson and Janet Oviedo; a great niece, Amber and three great nephews,  Scott, Zac and Leo.
A memorial gathering will be held at the Maus Funeral Home, Attica, on Wednesday, August 5th, from 4:00 p.m.  until the celebration of Gretchen's life at 6:00 p.m. with Rev. Dr. Thom Daubenspeck officiating.  Interment will be held at a later date in the Meharry Cemetery near Wingate, IN.   Memorial contributions may made to the Attica-Williamsport Evangelical Presbyterian Church.
