Attica - Anita L. (Whitkanack) Harris, 87, Attica, passed away in the Franciscan Health East Hospital, Lafayette, on Wednesday, January 21, 2026 at 3:40 p.m.
Anita was born in Kansas, Illinois on October 18, 1938. She was the daughter of the late Jesse and Mildred (White) Whitkanack. Anita lived in Kansas, IL until the age of two and then moved to Veedersburg, IN where she attended grade school at Stone Bluff and high school at Veedersburg. In 1953 Anita moved to the Riverside community east of Attica and finished her education by graduating from Attica High School in 1956.
Anita formerly worked as an advertising salesperson for Attica Ledger Tribune newspaper and was a bookkeeper for several auto dealerships which included Pogue Motor, Courtesy Chevrolet-Oldsmobile, Pritscher-Scott and Bryants, all in Attica. She also worked at McCreary's Auto Dealership in Fowler.
Anita and her husband, Paul Harris, co-owned Ann's Ceramics. Anita taught ceramics classes in the Fountain, Warren and Benton County areas. She attended the Attica Free Methodist Church. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Eagles Lodge # 2596 in Attica. She enjoyed gardening, working in her yard and family get-to-gathers. She was a die hard Purdue sports fan. She enjoyed bowling and bowled on several leagues and tournaments. She loved her pet dogs.
On July 6, 1963, Anita married Paul Jasper Harris Jr. in the Attica Free Methodist Church. Paul preceded her in death on May 7, 2017.
Anita leaves behind her step son, Richard Lee Harris, Wabash, IN; three sisters, Kay Bossaer, Sandy (Tom) Grady and Brenda Whitkanack-Meyer, all of Attica; several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Linda Beedle.
Friends may call at the Maus Funeral Home, Attica, on Tuesday, January 27th from 11:00 a.m. until the service time at 1:00 p.m. with Pastors Jerry Badgley and Joshua Barnett officiating. Burial will follow in the Riverside Cemetery, Attica. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Jude Children's Hospital or Paws 'n Claws Animal Shelter.
