West Point- Carol Nancy (Petway) Howey, 87, passed away at Lafayette Franciscan Hospital, Monday, September 14, 2026.
Carol was born on November 2, 1938 in Louisville, KY. She was the daughter of the late Raymond and Helen (Sipos Petway) Zachary. She was in the first graduating class fromSouthwestern High School as Valedictorian in 1957. She met her husband Leslie while on her Junior class trip to Washington DC. Leslie was on his Senior class trip. They were introduced by a teacher, Grace Marks, when the two schools were on a cruise on the Potomac River. On September 1, 1957 she married Leslie Francis Howey in West Point, IN. At the time of her passing, Carol and Leslie were married for 69 years. She was a secretary for the Physics Department at Purdue University before starting her family. She then volunteered her time to McCutcheon High School Band Boosters, she served as secretary to Mintonye Elementary PTA, Girl Scout Troup leader, and Action Area Scout Leader receiving numerous awards. She was active on the Jackson Methodist Church board. She and her husband shared their enthusiasm for the Civil War by presenting historical presentations to schools in Illinois, Iowa and Indiana for 30 years. She especially enjoyed portraying Mary Lincoln. She was active in the Lafayette Civil War Round Table. Surviving along with her husband are three children: Rev. Kevin (Pam) Howey of Wayntown, IN; Teresa (David) Knox of Lafayette, IN; and Kelly (Allen) Owens of Prattville, AL. Nine grandchildren: Brandon Howey, Austin Howey, Sommer Beard, Troy McVey, Eric McVey, Cory Patton, Jordon Knox, Elijah Knox, Faith Nice; and 18 great grandchildren. Also survived by her sister Patricia Petway Speaker of Lewiston, ME. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Gordon Zachary, and her grandson Zachary Howey. Visitation for Carol will be held at Maus Funeral Home in Attica, Indiana on Saturday, September 19th from 11:00AM-1:00PM and services being held at 1:00 PM with Rev. Kevin Howey and Alan Patton officiating. Burial will take place at West Point cemetery following services.
