Cayuga - Carolene June (McDowell) Grow, 84, formerly of Cayuga, IN and had been residing in the Indiana Veterans Home in West Lafayette, passed away in the Indiana Veterans Home on Friday, February 21, 2020 at 9:06 p.m.
Carolene was born in White County, IL on June 6, 1935. She was the daughter of the late Lincoln and Hattie (Foley) McDowell. As a young girl, her family moved to Valparaiso, Indiana where she graduated from Valparaiso High School. She attended Indiana State University (Indiana Teacher's College) and played the clarinet in the band. It was here where she met the love of her life, Rupert Burl Grow. They later married in December 1955 and resided in Washington, Indiana.
In 1970's Dad felt called to full-time ministry and they moved to Bismark, IL. After a short term, they moved to Cayuga, IN where they spent several years before moving to Milan, Missouri. Carolene enjoyed playing the piano and she and her husband Burl would often play and sing at weddings and funerals in the area. Burl passed away on May 17, 2005 in Milan, MO and was brought back to Indiana to be laid to rest in Thomas Cemetery near Newport, IN.
Carolene moved back to Cayuga, IN to be closer to her family and to the town where her daughter was living and raising her family. In 2012 Carolene moved in with her son and wife, Michael and Melanie in Lafayette, IN. She later moved to the Waters of Covington because of her declining health with Alzheimer's. It was there she met and married D.A. Pitts on October 24, 2015. They later moved to the Woodland Manor Nursing Center in Attica before finally moving to the Indiana Veterans Home. Shortly after arriving at the Indiana Veterans Home, D.A. passed away.
Carolene leaves behind three children, Michael Aaron (Melanie) Grow, Fort Wayne, IN; Tonya Renee (Roger) Lewis, Cayuga and Jason Eric Grow, Missouri; seven grandchildren, Joy (Tetia) LeGrow, Lafayette; Holly (Justin) Marvel, Noblesville; Sarah (Brant) Hathaway, Cayuga; Shelby (R.J.) Clarkston, Cayuga; Carmen (Gage) Puckett, Carmel, IN; Jason (Jamie) Morgan, Attica and Brody Grow, Kansas; seven great-grandchildren, Micah & Joel Marvel; Brant Ley Hathaway; Eli & Evelyn Clarkston; Brantley & Gatlin Morgan. She was very proud of all her children and was very close to all her extended family. She was preceded in death by a sister, Lelia Jordan; a half-sister, Theodosia Wyant and a brother Darrell McDowell.
Friends may call at the Maus Funeral Home, Attica on Friday, February 28th from 11:a.m. a.m. until the time of service at 1:00 p.m. with her son Michael Grow speaking. Burial will follow in the Thomas Cemetery, Newport, IN. with Rev. Dr. Keith Warner officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
