Dennis Dean
Stephens
Oct 29, 1946 — Oct 19, 2025
Fort Pierce
Pine Village - Dennis Dean Stephens, 78, peacefully received his forever wings on October 19, 2025 at Treasure Coast Hospice, Fort Pierce, FL.
He was born in Hammond on October 29, 1946 to the late Chester and Lenora (Andersen) Stephens of Pine Village. He was a 1965 graduate of Pine Village High School and then started his railroad career with Monon/CSX Railroad. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War 1966-1968, then returning to his career with the railroad. On June 12, 2003, Denny was involved in a CSX train derailment in St. John that left him unable to return to his railroad career. In 2004 he purchased his condo on Hutchinson Island, FL and he maintained his "snow bird" status by returning to his Lafayette home in the summers.
He was a member of the Pine Village Masonic Lodge, enjoyed fishing and boating, mushroom hunting, took pride in his vehicles, playing the lottery and was known for playing a few hands of cards and shooting pool at Hop's Shawnee in Lafayette. He always had a cup of joe in hand and the news on the TV with the ticker tape scrolling.
He is survived by his sister, Linda Gurnick and brother-in-law, Steve Gurnick of Pine Village; their sons, Calvin Gurnick, Indianapolis, and Ty Gurnick, South Lyon, MI. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, John C. Stephens; a half-sister, Patricia V. Warner; and his purr pal, Smokey Cat.
Denny's sister and family extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff of Visiting Angels Treasure Coast, Treasure Coast Hospice and Hwy 1 Fort Pierce Publix for their support kindness, grace and dignity shown to Denny.
There will be a private cremation and a private gravesite service at a later date. Maus Funeral Home, Attica is handling the arrangements.
