George Sterling Smith, 74, peacefully passed away at his home while surrounded by
family on Saturday June 20, 2020. George was born in Savannah, GA, on August 16,
1945, and was lovingly adopted by George Edgar and Roselynn Elizabeth (Sterling)
Smith.
George grew up in Rye Brook, NY, and graduated from Port Chester High School in
1963. He studied at Carnegie Institute of Technology, American Academy of Dramatic
Art, and Boston University. Following his education, George enlisted in the U.S. Air
Force and served in the Vietnam War. At the time of his honorable discharge, George
had attained the rank of Sergeant.
After serving, George entered the communications field with radio broadcasting and
operated a freelance advertising agency. He used his talents as a radio engineer and
announcer at WMIX (Mt.Vernon, IL), WMLA (Bloomington-Normal, IL), and WHPO
(Hoopeston, IL). After his retirement he served as a 911 dispatcher and an auxiliary
policeman for the City of Hoopeston.
George enjoyed listening to music and playing the bass. He had amazing artistic ability
and created several drawings and paintings. Along with his artistic ability, he was an
avid woodworker who designed and created unique projects. He was also a skilled
photographer who turned life moments into works of art. He was known for his quick wit,
infectious smile, and kind and compassionate spirit.
George was preceded in death by his mother and father. He leaves behind his wife of
33 years, Julie A. Wrigley of Hoopeston, IL, who he married on April 26, 1987. He is
also survived by two daughters, Jennifer (Martin) Massoff and Lisa (Steve) Foster, Mt.
Vernon, IL; a son, Benjamin Smith, Bloomington, IL; and eight grandchildren.
As per his request, cremation services will be accorded and a memorial service will be
held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the ASPCA
