Harry "Pete" R. Newnum, 81, of rural Independence, passed away at his home, surrounded by his family, on Thursday, December 2, 2021 at 4:28 a.m. following a short term illness with cancer.
Pete, as he was known to family and friends, was born in Tangier, Indiana on September 15, 1940. He was the son of the late James and Hester (Russell) Newnum. He was raised in the Bloomingdale and Tangier area of Parke County and graduated from Tangier High School in 1958.
Pete later entered the service and served in the U.S. Army during Vietnam. At the time of his honorable discharge in 1968 he had attained the rank of SP4.
Pete was a 50 year member of the Local Carpenters Union # 215.
Pete was an active member of the Riverview United Methodist Church in Independence. He was a good woodworker and helped in the remodeling of the Riverview Church. He was a member of the American Legion Post # 52 of Attica. He was a 50 year member of the Pine Village Lodge # 315 F. & A.M. He loved working in his vegetable and flower gardens. He enjoyed cars especially his Lincoln. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren play baseball. He was a NASCAR race fan. Pete loved to travel around the United States.
He married Judith Ann Waymire on October 5, 1975 in the Riverview United Methodist Church in Independence.
Pete leaves behind his wife, Judy of 46 years along with a daughter, Kristie (friend-Bruce Richard) Rector, Fillmore, IN; two step daughters, Sheri (Dave) Brown and Kelly (Tony Jordan) Beedle, both of Williamsport; two sisters, Betty Young, Cayuga and Barb Kiger, Tangier; six grandchildren, Katlyn Rector, Brandon Rector, Christopher (Cinthya) Brown, Emily (R.J.) Cole, Tonya (Ryan) DePugh and Ashley Beedle; seven great-grandchildren, Isabella Brown, Natalia Brown, Wesley Cole, Aydin DePugh, Holtyn DePugh, Gaberiel Beedle and Louie Key; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Newnum, Rockville. He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Brad Rector; two brothers, Bob & Paul (the late-Virginia) Newnum and a brother-in-law, John Kiger.
Friends may call at the Maus Funeral Home, Attica, on Tuesday, December 7th from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. A Masonic Memorial service will be conducted by the Pine Village Lodge # 315 at 7:45 p.m. Funeral services will be held in the Riverview United Methodist Church, in Independence on Wednesday, December 8th, at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Dan Jordan, grandson Christopher Brown and Pastor Bill Alenduff officiating. Burial with military honors will be held in Riverside Cemetery, Attica.
Memorial contributions in Pete's memory may be made to the Warren County Food Pantry or the Williamsport Baseball Program. Masks will be required at the visitation and service.
