Attica - After a brief hospital stay, Jackie "Jack" Lee Sorters, 82, Attica, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, March 30, 2026 at 1:45 p.m. in the Franciscan Health Hospital in Lafayette, with his family by his side.
Jack, as he was known to family and friends, was born in the Maris Hospital, Williamsport, Indiana on March 6, 1944.  He was the son of the late Leo Edward Sorters and Genevieve (Kirts) Shepherd.  Jack was raised in Attica, graduating from Attica High School in 1962.  Jack excelled in sports while in high school, playing quarterback for the high school football team; playing guard on the basketball team, which went to the semi-state tournament his senior year; and as an outstanding pitcher for the high school baseball team, leading the Attica record book as a starting pitcher with the most wins in a season until his record was broken in 1980.  He also found time to play on the high school tennis team.  He later  played on the Harrison Steel slow pitch softball team as its shortstop.
After graduation, Jack joined the Indiana National Guard, serving the Guard for 6 years.
Jack worked at R.R. Donneley & Son in Indianapolis and Crawfordsville for several years until joining Harrison Steel Castings Company in Attica in 1977.  He worked at Harrison Steel for 32 years retiring in 2009.  After retirement from Harrison Steel, Jack enjoyed driving cars  for Bryant's and Alsop's Car Dealerships in Attica.  Jack also served as the Logan Township, Fountain County Trustee for over 20 years.
Jack was a 48 year member of the Attica Eagles Lodge # 2596 of Attica, serving as treasurer for the Lodge.  He had received the Barney Tibbetts Award for his service to the Lodge.  Jack was an avid Purdue University sports fan.  He enjoyed watching NASCAR with Bill Elliott as his favorite driver. Jack was a long time San Francisco Giants baseball fan, with Willie Mays as his favorite player.  He liked to spend time in his yard, keeping it manicured and enjoyed time spent grilling out for his family in the backyard.  Jack liked to travel and his two favorite places to go with his wife, Kris, was to New Orleans and Madison, IN.
On December 9, 1983, Jack married Kristi "Kris" Kay Shonkwiler in Attica, IN.  He leaves behind his wife, Kris of 42 years along with three children, Christy (Tom) Harrison, West Lafayette; Heather (the late-Stu) Keaton, Lafayette; Ami (Dustin) McDaniel, Attica; four grandchildren, Jacob (Marklee) Marcov, Caitlyn McDaniel, Naomi McDaniel and Faith McDaniel; two great-grandchildren, Aurora and Aliza Mattlin; and his cat Onyx.  Jack was preceded in death by two brothers, Arnet Devon Sorters and infant brother Larry Dean Sorters.
A celebration of Jack's life will be held at the Attica Eagles Lodge, 122 W. Main St., Attica, on Saturday, April 18th from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m. with a fish fry.  In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Attica Community Foundation. Inurnment of his cremated remains will be held at a later date in the Riverside Cemetery, Attica.
