Hillsboro - John Neil Curtis, 80, of rural Hillsboro, passed away at his residence on Thursday, October 17, 2019 at 10:30 p.m.
John was born in Penfield, Illinois on January 9, 1939. He was the son of the late Guy and Ellen (Blackwell) Curtis. John grew up in Penfield and graduated from Armstrong High School in 1958. He has resided in Hillsboro since 1962.
John formerly worked as a livestock buyer for Deckers Livestock, east of Hillsboro, until 1978. He then operated the Fountain County Livestock Sale Barn in Veedersburg until his retirement in 1999.
John was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team and enjoyed his travels to St. Louis to watch the Cardinals play. He also enjoyed following the University of Illinois men's basketball team. He along with his wife enjoyed traveling to various flea markets. He enjoyed the outdoors and liked to deer hunt. He also liked to visit the casinos.
On July 18, 1959 John married Carolyn Fern Ashcraft in Collison, IL. Carolyn preceded him in death on May 23, 2019.
He leaves behind his two sons, John P. "JP" (Jodi) Curtis, Veedersburg and David (Niky) Curtis, Waynetown; a sister, Joan Carpenter, Gifford, IL; ten grandchildren, Landon (Amber) Curtis, twins Kathryn and Kaitlyn Curtis, C.J. (Taylor) Voorhees, Shelby Curtis, Kolby Curtis, Josey Curtis, Zane Curtis, Adam (Kim) Keeling and April (Chris) Hensler; seven great-grandchildren, Parker, Wyatt, Serenity, Wes, Emma, Stella and Auggie. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Voorhees; eight brothers and three sisters.
Friends may call at the Maus Funeral Home, Hillsboro on Thursday, October 24th, from 11:00 a.m. until service time at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Kevin Wildman officiating. Burial will follow in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Hillsboro. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hillsboro Fire Department.
