Covington - Laurence Lee Cole, 83, of Covington, passed away at his daughter's residence in Kingman, with his family by his side, on Tuesday, July 7, 2026 at 12:50 p.m.
Laurence was born in Danville, Illinois on August 11, 1942.  He was the son of the late Homer Cecil and Frances Irene (Lucas) Cole.  Laurence was raised on their family farm, south of Attica.  He attended Portland Arch Grade School and then his 7th & 8th grade years at Shawnee School.  He then attended and graduated from Covington High School, where he played basketball for the Covington Trojans.
Laurence farmed with his father as he grew up, and then on his own in his early years.
In 1963, Laurence entered the Indiana National Guard, and later did his basic training in Ft. Polk, Louisiana before being transferred back to the Indiana National Guard, serving until his honorable discharge in 1969.  He had attained the rank of Platoon Sergeant at the time of his discharge.        After farming, he and his family moved to rural Covington.  He received his insurance license and worked with Farm Bureau, then owned and operated Cole Insurance Agency in Covington.  He finished his insurance career working at Tanner Insurance Agency in Covington.  He also owned and operated the Trojan Mart in Covington.
Laurence enjoyed playing golf, and following his grandchildren to all of their activities.  He especially loved attending their sporting events.  In August 2024, Laurence and his wife Bonnie moved to Kingman.
On May 15, 1965, Laurence married Bonnie Rose Bodine at the old West Liberty Church, south of Covington.
Laurence leaves behind his wife, Bonnie of 61 years, along with two children, Diane (Doug) Davenport, Kingman and Brad (Amy) Cole, Attica;  five grandchildren, Josh (Presley Pearman) Davenport, Veedersburg; Landon (Andrea) Davenport, Kingman; Luke (Sydney) Davenport, Kingman; Emma (Nolan Evans) Cole, Pierceton, IN and Molly (Kolton) Pearson, Covington; six great-grandchildren, Liam, Boden, Duke, Lilly, Ella and Everly.  Laurence was preceded in death by a sister, Norma Rose Smith.
Friends may call at the Maus Funeral Home, Attica, on Saturday, July 11th from 11:00 a.m. until the service time at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor David Sims officiating.  Burial, with military honors,  will follow in the Coal Creek Cemetery, south of Covington.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Western Indiana Community Foundation, c/o Coal Creek Cemetery Association.
