Williamsport - Major Raymond Glenn Smyth, USA Retired, 86 of Williamsport and formerly of Attica, passed away in the Brookview Care Center, Indianapolis, Indiana with his wife and sons by his side, on Wednesday, September 21, 2022 at 5:35 p.m.
Ray, as he was known to family and friends, was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on May 19, 1936. He was the son of the late Glenn and Juanita S. (Gittings) Smyth. Ray was raised in Lagro, Indiana and graduated from Lagro High School in 1954. Following graduation from high school, Ray entered Indiana University where he studied Political Science. Just before his senior year, Ray enlisted in the U.S. Army and served two tours in Vietnam. He was later was granted permission to continue his studies at Indiana University where he completed his BA degree in Political Science with a minor in French. Following graduation he completed his military service and at the time of his honorable discharge had attained the rank of Major.
While at Indiana University he met his future wife, A. Gretchen Finney and they were married on August 27, 1960 in Attica.
Following his retirement from the service, Ray and Gretchen moved to Attica where Ray worked as an Assistant Vice-President of the former Central National Bank, retiring from banking in 1995. In 1993, Ray and his sons started the Respond First Aid Systems until 2003. While living in Attica Ray served on the Attica Consolidated School Board from 1980-1988. He also served as Past President of the Attica Potawatomi Festival from 1979-1980. Ray was an active member of the Attica-Williamsport Evangelical Presbyterian Church, serving as Deacon and Elder in the church. He was also the church organist until 2018. He was a member of the MOAA (Military Officers Association of America). He was and avid Chicago Cubs fan and Indiana University sports fan. He enjoyed playing golf at the Harrison Hills Country Club. He enjoyed traveling with Gretchen and listening to music and playing the organ.
Ray leaves behind his wife, Gretchen of 62 years along with three sons, Charles (Ann) Smyth, Greenfield, IN; David (Cindy) Smyth, Williamsport and Steven (Shannon) Smyth, Attica; six grandchildren, Renee (Alex) Hirsch, Lindsey (Abby) Smyth, Christopher (fiancée-Margaret Commons) Smyth, Nathan Smyth, Austin (Delainey) Smyth and Owen Smyth; six great-grandchildren, Karsyn, Layla, C.J., Wren, Sutton and Nolan.  He was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Miller.
Friends may gather at the Maus Funeral Home on Wednesday, September 28th, from 5:00 p.m. until the memorial service time at 8:00 p.m. with Pastor Shawn Carafa officiating. Military honors will follow the memorial service at the funeral home with American Legion Post # 52 assisting the U.S. Army with honors. Inurnment will take place at a later time in the Meharry Cemetery near Wingate. Memorial contributions may be made to the Attica-Williamsport Evangelical Presbyterian Church organ fund.
