Williamsport - Margaret Jean "Maggie" (Taylor) Hurley, 94, of Williamsport and a long time resident of Kramer, joined her deceased husband, Everett, and 3 doxies (Inga, Gretchen and Kande) who were waiting for her at the bridge on Sunday, July 17, 2022 at 6:15 p.m. Now today, they joyfully all crossed the bridge together.
Jean was born July 26, 1927 in Lafayette, Indiana. Her parents were the late
Herman "Beanie" and Blanche (Hosterman) Taylor. They moved her, at the age of 2, back to Kramer, Indiana, where she grew up, attending all elementary grades in the Kramer School and graduated from Williamsport High School in May, 1945.
Upon graduation, she was recommended by her business teacher, Leota Sims, for a civil service job as a clerk with the O.P.A. office located in the Warren County Court House. When the office closed, she was awarded a medal for meritorious service.
On January 17, 1945, she married Everett Hurley, who was on leave from Alaska where he served as an operating engineer during World War II. In 1947, they made their home in a Walnut Garden Quonset hut in Kramer and she remained in Kramer until October, 2013, when she moved to Williamsport to live in the cottages owned by American Seniors.
During her life, Jean worked at Radio Materials as a tester in the radio speaker line until the plant closed. She also worked for Guthman Manufacturing and as a bookkeeper for Martin Lumber. While living in Indianapolis area, she worked as a clerk at Peaslee Gulbert and in the accounting department of Cummins Diesel.
In August of 1954, Jean accepted a position with Attica Consolidated Schools as an administrative secretary/bookkeeper. The last 4 years of her 25 years with the corporation, she was appointed by the school board as treasurer and business manager, replacing Francis Lee after his retirement.
Among her accomplishments, she was especially proud of he work to secure Public Employee Retirement Fund coverage for non-certified employees.
In December, 1994, Mrs. Hurley joined the staff of Dr. P.R. Petrich in Attica as a medical coder and bookkeeper and served there for 8 years.
Jean was a retired member of the Retired Indiana Public Employees Association, Indiana Association of School Business Officials, and Fountain County Business and Professional Women. The Indiana Association of Educational office Professionals recognized her for her 25 years of service to the Attica School Corporation.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 2 sisters, Anna May (Taylor) Smith Young and Mary Marjorie (Taylor) Hines; 3 brothers, Laverne Taylor, Raymond Taylor and Richard (Ivadean) Taylor; four nephews, Larry Taylor, Terry Smith, Jeff Taylor and Paul Taylor along with a niece, Marlena Thomas.
She leaves behind her nieces, Janice (Herb) Larson; Charlene Smith, Valerie Taylor; Shelly Taylor; Sisters-in-law, JoAnn (Raymond-deceased) Taylor; Joan (Laverne-deceased) Taylor; nephew-in-law, Ed Thomas; nephews, Bill (Holly) Taylor, Sr.; John (Kay) Taylor; Wesley (Jan) Odle; several great-nieces and great-nephews.
Friends may call at the Maus Funeral Home, Attica, on Sunday, July 24th from 12:00 p.m. until service time at 2:00 p.m. with Chaplain Rich Stoll officiating. Burial will follow in the Rainsville Cemetery, Rainsville, IN. Memorial contributions may be made to the Warren County Community Foundation or the Paws 'n Claws Animal Shelter.
