Lawrenceville, GA - Michael James Smith, 52, of Lawrenceville, GA, passed away in the Emory John Creek Hospital in John Creek, GA on Tuesday, July 28, 2020 at 10:45 after being infected with the COVID virus.
Michael was born in Lafayette, Indiana on July 24, 1968. He was the son of the late James Myron and Joette R. (Rhymer) Smith. As a son of an Army officer, Michael lived in several different States and graduated from Brookwood High School in Snellville, GA. Following graduation Michael entered the U.S. Air Force and served during Desert Storm. At the time of his honorable discharge, Michael attained the rank of Senior Airman.
Following his separation from the military in 1993 he moved to the Lawrenceville, GA area and worked for over twenty years with Alcon Laboratories where he served as a Electro Mechanic Technician.
He enjoyed listening to music and was an excellent musician, playing bass guitar with several local bands in the Atlanta area. He also enjoyed watching hockey.
He leaves behind his aunt, Billie (William) Forney, Lafayette; Uncles, Michael (Cheryl) Morris, Lafayette; Kenneth (Joy) Miller, West Point and James E. Rhymer, Monticello, IN; several cousins. He was preceded in death by four aunts, Betty A. Marquez, Patty S. Miller, Maggie R. Rhymer and Dannell Rhymer along with an uncle, Norman R. Rhymer.
A gathering will be held at the Maus Funeral Home, Attica, on Tuesday, August 11th, from 11:00 a.m. until memorial service time at 12:00 p.m. with Pastor Kurt Kincanon officiating. Inurnment with military honors will be held in the Riverside Cemetery, next to his parents.  All people are expected to wear masks during their time in the funeral home.
