Paul Edward "Ed"  Payne, a resident of both Attica, Indiana and Davie, Florida passed away unexpectedly on August 5, 2024 at Franciscan Health in Lafayette, Indiana. Over recent months he had been battling illness.
Ed was born on July 22, 1949 in Crawfordsville, Indiana to Mary Pauline (Minnick) Payne. He grew  up in rural Veedersburg on a dairy farm. His favorite childhood memory was spending the night with his Grandma Minnick because he got to wake up early and work the dairy cows with her. This was the beginning of a work ethic that would follow him for his life.
Ed attended Richland Township School until the 11th grade when the school consolidated with Fountain Central High School where he graduated in 1967. As a young adult he was sponsored by Honda to race dirt bikes and he enjoyed sharing his memories from these hill climbing experiences with his children.
He married Kim Payne on August 5, 1983. They have been married for 41 years. He had 5 children, 13 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren. He had a passion for hard work and rose in the ranks to become a concrete construction general superintendent at an early age. He constructed many large scale concrete structures throughout his life. Some of the projects he was most proud of include the first parking garage at the Fort Lauderdale airport in the early 80's, a job where he made lifelong friendships, several bridges in the Atlanta area, the University of South Carolina fitness center, the Miami airport endfill, and the Earlington Heights connector.
He enjoyed fishing, playing slot machines, riding his motorcycle at Daytona Beach Bike week with his longtime friend Richard Larsen, discussing work with his son and colleagues, and having his grandchildren spend their spring vacation at his Florida residence.
He was preceded in death by his mother Mary Pauline Payne and his brother Mike Payne. He is survived by his wife, Kim (Crane) Payne, his children, Curtis (Julie) Payne, Jarrod DeZarn, Jacklyn Gruber, Joanna (Cody) Sichts, and Jacob (Jheanell) Payne, his grandchildren, Stacey Deel, Lee (Terra) Payne, Lilyjah Sichts, Logan Sichts, Liam Sichts, Lola Sichts, Luke Sichts, Lainey Sichts, Aaliyah Gruber, Isaiah Gruber, Prezlee DeZarn, Journee Wilkes, and Jupiter Payne, and 5 great grandchildren; his two sisters, Pat (Jeff) Liggett, Newtown ad Sandy (Kent) Payne, Veedersburg.
Friends may call on Tuesday August 13, 2024 from 5-7 pm at Maus Funeral home in Attica, Indiana with the service by Brenda McIntosh beginning at 7pm.
