Attica, IN - Robert James Gorman Jr., 81, of rural Attica (Independence) and formerly of New Jersey and Maryland, passed away in the Franciscan Health East Hospital, Lafayette on Thursday, November 21, 2024 at 3:15 a.m.
Robert was born in Penns Grove, New Jersey on September 5, 1943. Robert was the son of the late Robert James and Sarah Jane (Sayers) Gorman Sr. Robert grew up in Penns Grove and graduated from Penns Grove High School. He later attended Salem County Vocational-Technical Institute and studied the art of scientific glass blowing technology. Following graduation from this school, Robert secured a job with the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington D.C. where he created scientific glass apparatus through his ability in glass blowing. He retired from the Naval Research Laboratory in 2000. Following his retirement, he continued to work at the Naval Research Laboratory as an independent contractor until his final retirement in 2006. He then moved to Indiana where he settled in a small community in Warren County called Attica. There he continued his trade of glass blowing through Purdue University as a part time employment until his declining health prevented him from working.
Robert was raised in the Catholic faith. He enjoyed working with model trains and R/C airplanes.
Robert was first married to Roseann Dipietro in 1965. She preceded him in death on August 20, 2000. On May 1, 2002, Robert married Diane L. Miller in the Bahamas.
He leaves behind his wife, Diane of 22 years along with three sons, Robert James (Stephanie) Gorman III, Maryland; Mark Christopher (Ellen) Gorman, Millersville, MD and Glenn David Gorman, Waldorf, MD; six grandchildren, Erika Bryant, Antonio (Jennifer) Gorman, Ryan Gorman, Abigail Gorman, Camarie (Jeremiah) Vedis and Riley Gorman; five great-grandchildren, McKenna, Beau, Kynlee, Boston and Maisie.
A celebration of Robert's life will be held at Maus Funeral Home, Attica, on Saturday, February 22nd from 11:00 a.m. until the celebration of life service at 1:00 p.m. Inurment to follow in the St. Mary's Cemetery near Bryantown, MD.
