Attica - Steven Erroll Spansell, 68, Attica, passed away peacefully at his home with his family by his side on Friday, January 8, 2021 at 2:45 a.m.
Steve, as he was known to family and friends, was born in Oakland, California on August 5, 1952. He was the son of the late Malvern Erroll and Frances Louise (Bell) Spansell. He was raised and educated in California, moving to Attica in 1984.
Steve formerly worked at ALCOA and later for Tate & Lyle in Lafayette, retiring due to disability with his heart. He later received a heart transplant and was a 10 year heart recipient. Steve has more recently been working at the Alsop Car Dealership in Attica, where he drove cars for the dealership.
In 1970, Steve entered the U.S. Marine Corp. and served until his honorable discharge in 1977. He served during the Vietnam War and at the time of his honorable discharge had attained the rank of Sergeant. After he was discharged from the Marine Corp. he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served from 1978 until his honorable discharge in 1979.
Steve liked to be outdoors and enjoyed archery, hunting, fishing and fly fishing, camping and traveling in his RV. Steve was an excellent cook and enjoyed entertaining his hunting buddies or family with a enjoyable meal. He would assist in the men's breakfast at the Attica Free Methodist Church on Saturdays. He enjoyed the fellowship of family and friends, whatever the occasion. He loved his children, but adored his grandchildren.
He leaves behind his wife, Debbie (Smith) Serie Spansell, who has been by his side since 1993. He also leaves behind his children, April (the late Ron Hall) Hall; Zack (Chasity) Spansell; Jered Spansell; David (Kayla) Serie and Katie (Rusty) Irwin; his eight grandchildren, Major Hall, Jeniece Hall, Reed Horton, Max Spansell, Isabella Spansell; Lainie Serie, Kailey Serie and Kylee Irwin; five siblings, Peggy Hollon, Greg (Karen) Spansell, Carolyn (Mark) Vaughn, Mark (Michelle) Spansell and Martha (Brent) Pellico; several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Maus Funeral Home, Attica, on Tuesday, January 12th, from 4:00 p.m. until service time at 7:00 p.m. with Pastor Jerry Badgley officiating. A military service will follow with the U.S. Marine Corp and American Legion Post # 52 present. Memorial contributions may be made to the Area Sharing Kindness (ASK) Food Pantry. The family has asked that all attendees coming to the funeral home wear masks and keep social distancing.
