Velma "Kay" Gustus, 85, of Attica passed away Sunday July 31, 2022 , 12:20 p.m., at St Mary's Healthcare in Lafayette, IN. Kay was born October 3, 1936 in Attica to the late John Grant and Delza Lea (Frodge) Fewry. She was raised in Attica and graduated from Attica High School in 1954.
Kay was very active with the Attica Little League Association when her children were younger, and she also helped reestablish the Attica Athletic Boosters at the Attica High School. Kay was the Shawnee Township Trustees for many years including taking care of the cemeteries with her husband. Kay worked many years running the polls for Shawnee township and continued when she moved into the city limits. She was later elected and served on the Attica City Council.
She worked many years at Indiana Bell Telephone company as a phone operator. She then worked several years at RMC in Attica and Harrison Steel Casting Company in Attica. She also worked at Meredith Hall at Purdue University in the mail room and front office. She loved being a mom to the students. Her favorite job was being a mother and grandmother. She loved her family and would talk to anybody about her family and especially her grandkids and great grandkids. She was also an avid Purdue fan and would attend most games and when her health declined, she continued to support them on TV.
Kay married Jerry Dean Gustus on November 1, 1955 in Council Bluffs, IA. He preceded her in death in January 2018. She is survived by two sons, John (Marti) Gustus, Lafayette and Mark (Karmin) Gustus, Veedersburg; a daughter, Mary Kay (Bill) Inman, Williamsport; eight grandchildren, Matt (Amy) Gustus, Nate (Meg) Gustus, Courtney (David) Greer, Alexandria Inman (fiancé – Alexander McDaniel), Kishia (Dan) Linville, Keely Criswell (companion – Cole Bodine). Daisha (Shane) Miller & Derrick (Lesley) Marshall; eight great-granddaughters and eleven great-grandsons. Kay was also preceded in death by her parents and sister.
Visitation will be held at Maus Funeral Home, Attica, on Friday, September 2, 2022 at 11:00 am to 1:00pm with memorial service at 1:00 pm. Inurnment immediately following at the Riverside Cemetery, Attica. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Riley Children's Hospital in Kay's honor or to the Attica Community Foundation. The family would like to thank the staff of Autumn Trace and St. Mary Healthcare Center for the care they provided Kay over the last 4 years.
