Mellott - William "Bill" Edward Oakley, 80, Mellott, passed away in the Franciscan Alliance Hospital, Crawfordsville, on Friday, July 12, 2024 at 3:59 p.m.
Bill was born at home in Mellott, Indiana on November 6, 1943. He was the son of the late George Madison and Mary Eva (Bennett) Oakley. Bill was a life resident of Mellott, graduating from Richland Township High School in 1961, where he played on the varsity basketball team.
Bill worked at C & D Batteries in Attica from 1969 until his retirement in 2006. Bill enjoyed the outdoors spending time hunting and fishing. He bowled on several leagues at Shawnee Lanes in Attica. He especially enjoyed the time spent with family and watching his grandchildren compete in sporting events. He enjoyed the time spent on Sugar Mill Lake and Camp Ground near Hillsboro. He was a former volunteer fireman with the Mellott Fire Department. He was a member of the Moose Lodge of Attica # 1482 and a former member of the Eagles Lodge # 2596 of Attica.
On May 28, 1966, Bill married Susan A. Sanders in Mellott, IN.
Bill leaves behind his wife, Susan of 58 years along with two children, Robert (Susan) Oakley and Diane (John) Scheurich, both of Mellott; three sisters, Pat Brown, Veedersburg; Peggy Banta, Crawfordsville and Sandra Puglisi, Mellott; five grandchildren, Cole (Amy) Zeller, Cacy Zeller, Paige Scheurich, Jaren (Bailey) Oakley and Shay (Mason) McCollum; three great-grandchildren, Clay & Clara Zeller and Wayne Oakley. He was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Booe.
A gathering with a celebration of Bill's life will be held at The Barn at Sugar Mill Lake and Campground on Sunday, July 21st from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m., located at 3101 S. Sugar Mill Lake Road, Hillsboro. Friends are welcome to stop by and share memories of Bill's life. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Mellott Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 201, Mellott, IN 47958.
